ICYMI: Pritzker Faces Brutal Coverage After Dodging Madigan And Blagojevich Questions At Sun-Times Forum

J.B. Pritzker is facing brutal press following yesterday’s Chicago Sun-Times editorial board forum after refusing to call for Mike Madigan’s resignation or show remorse for his conduct on the Blagojevich FBI wiretaps. Pritzker was given multiple opportunities to distance himself from both controversial politicians. Instead, he chose to dodge and hedge in a transparent attempt to avoid casting blame on his longtime political allies and take responsibility for his actions.

Following the forum, NBC Chicago reported that Pritzker “will not speak critically of Madigan or Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios.” Watch here.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Sun-Times write-up of the forum focused on Pritzker’s ties to disgraced Governor Rod Blaogjevich.

“Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, has been hit hard as of late by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign over FBI wiretaps of Pritzker’s conversations with now imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.”

Pritzker was asked at the forum whether he had “close ties” to Blagojevich. Pritzker dodged that question, instead only saying that he regretted “the tone of portions of that conversation.” Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mark Brown labeled Pritzker’s response a “limited” and “fuzzy defense,” calling the FBI tapes a “significant problem for Pritzker.”

“To the extent Pritzker ‘rebuffed’ Blagojevich, he did so rather gently, leading to the particularly unbecoming ‘I’d do it’ segment being used in the Rauner television commercials.”

J.B. Pritzker’s ties to Mike Madigan and Rod Blagojevich represent an existential threat to his candidacy.

J.B. Pritzker Won’t Say What The Tax Rates Would Be In What He Calls “Detailed” Tax Plan

Look for Pritzker, Democrats “to be vague on the question of rates because to be specific would hand Rauner a tax-hike club he would use to beat them with”

We already know Democratic candidate for governor J.B. Pritzker loves tax hikes, just like his tax-hiking political patron, Mike Madigan.

Last April, Pritzker offered up his own tax hike plan even larger than Madigan’s 32% increase. And after Madigan’s levy became law, Pritzker said Illinois may need yet another tax increase to pay for all of his new spending.

Just last week, Pritzker released two new campaign ads touting a so-called “detailed plan” to hike taxes on Illinoisans even more under a new graduated income tax system.

The only problem? There are no details.

Pritzker’s commercials or campaign website offer no details of what the new, higher tax rates would be.

From the News-Gazette:

But look for the Democrats, excluding Daiber, to be vague on the question of rates because to be specific would hand Rauner a tax-hike club he would use to beat them with.
Demonstrating that point, Pritzker just released two more television commercials in which he endorsed the amendment without further elaboration.
So why is J.B. Pritzker mum on the details of his new tax hike plan?
Because to offer any specific details of higher tax rates would tie him even further to Mike Madigan and his massive, unpopular tax hikes.

J.B. Pritzker Doubles Down On His Promise To Hike Taxes, But Refuses To Say By How Much

Pritzker’s new TV ad touts his “detailed plan” to hike taxes, but his plan doesn’t even include tax rates

“J.B. Pritzker’s so-called ‘detailed plan’ to increase taxes is light on details because he knows he can’t make the math work for all of his new spending. Pritzker says he’ll hike taxes even higher than Madigan, but won’t say by how much. Pritzker’s tax hike plan lacks specifics because he knows it will decimate Illinois jobs and small businesses. Illinois taxpayers can’t afford J.B. Pritzker working hand in hand with Mike Madigan in Springfield to hike taxes even higher.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

Today, J.B. Pritzker’s campaign for governor released two new television ads touting a “detailed plan” to hike taxes even higher than Mike Madigan’s recent 32% tax hike.

So how detailed is Pritzker’s tax hike plan?

Not detailed at all. In fact, Pritzker’s tax hike plan doesn’t even say what the tax rates will be. He just promises that taxes will be going up, decimating Illinois small businesses in the process, as one independent group said about a similar tax hike plan.

So where exactly are J.B. Pritzker’s so-called “detailed plans” to hike taxes? How high is Pritzker willing to increase taxes? Does Pritzker think further tax hikes won’t destroy jobs or increase the exodus of Illinois families to other states? These are questions Pritzker must answer.

Since J.B. Pritzker is light on details, perhaps Illinois voters should give his political patron, Mike Madigan, a call.

J.B. Pritzker Still Refuses To Weigh In On Ally Joe Berrios’ Corrupt Property Tax Racket

Pritzker among the machine politicians “hiding” from the Berrios question

2018 brings a new year, and J.B. Pritzker is hoping that taxpayers will forget about his corrupt ally, Cook County Assessor and Democratic party boss Joe Berrios.

For years, Berrios has faced accusations of nepotism, patronage, and corruption in his assessor’s office, costing homeowners dearly, particularly those in low-income minority communities.

Just last year, the Chicago Tribune and ProPublica Illinois released a multi-part report shedding light on the corrupt practices of Berrios and how he has rigged the Cook County property tax system to benefit his political cronies at everyone else’s expense. And weeks ago, Berrios faced renewed questions of patronage in his office.

But J.B. Pritzker doesn’t want to talk about his ally Joe Berrios because Pritzker is an integral part of Berrios’ and Madigan’s corrupt property tax racket.

When will Pritzker break his silence on Berrios?

From the Chicago Tribune’s editorial:

In 2016, Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios began the year staunchly defending nepotism in his office. He began 2017 engaged in an ethics battle with the county’s inspector general. And he begins 2018 under intense scrutiny for a property assessment system that, according to a lawsuit, perpetuates institutional racism, a serious, recurring charge Berrios denies.

Most politicians would not survive with a professional record as questionable as his. But bad press has never sidelined Berrios. It hasn’t ended his political relationships either. From Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to House Speaker Michael Madigan, Berrios’ allies protect him and campaign donors help re-elect him.

… More evidence of what all of us know:

Machine pols stick together.

… Remind us: What usually happens when politicians become too toxic for their party? When they drum up too much bad press? They get dumped. But not Berrios, who is chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party and a prolific fundraiser. So let’s call this sorry saga “The Silence of the Dems.”
Emanuel generally dodges Berrios’ miserable performance, the effects of his assessments on minority communities and the increasing controversies. When Emanuel finally spoke in mid-December, he said next to nothing: “I think there needs to be a look at it to make sure there is fairness across the system.” Preckwinkle launched an as-yet-incomplete review of the assessment process, yet she supports Berrios. J.B. Pritzker, the Democrats’ gubernatorial front-runner, routinely pivots to a different subject. White’s radio ad for Berrios begins, “Let me tell you about my friend Joe Berrios” and defends him as a protector of homeowners.

… It has been surprising, however, to watch the wagons circle to protect Berrios, again and again, year after year. Where are all the “reform-minded” progressive Democrats forcefully, publicly demanding change? Calling for his ouster? Denouncing a system that benefits the wealthy at the expense of the poor?

They’re hiding, that’s where.

J.B. Pritzker Silent On Joe Berrios’ Patronage Because He Benefits From The Corruption

Another investigation reveals that Pritzker supporter Joe Berrios’ office is plagued by patronage

“There’s a reason why J.B. Pritzker is silent on his allies’ use of patronage – Pritzker has been on the receiving end of Blagojevich patronage himself. If elected, J.B. Pritzker would use state government to dole out patronage jobs to his allies and cronies of Madigan’s Chicago Machine. Illinois taxpayers can’t afford J.B. Pritzker’s tacit approval of patronage and corruption.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

Two weeks ago, ProPublica Illinois and the Chicago Tribune published their latest installment in a bombshell report exposing the incompetence and corruption of Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios. The report said Berrios “failed” at his job and allowed political allies like Mike Madigan to profit from faulty assessments.

Now, ProPublica Illinois and the Chicago Tribune are out with yet another extensive investigation into Joe Berrios’ office. This time, it’s exposing his use of patronage, favoritism, and nepotism. From the investigation:

Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios has never made any secret of his affinity for old-school politics that put a premium on loyalty and favors.

… The monitors’ reports, reviewed by the Chicago Tribune and ProPublica Illinois, reveal a persistent pattern in Berrios’ office of improper hiring and firing, arbitrary staffing decisions and resistance to change. The pace of reform has been slow and the assessor’s commitment often tepid, records and interviews show.

Berrios, who is backing J.B. Pritzker for governor, isn’t the only Pritzker supporter who has a problem with patronage. Pritzker supporters Jesse White and Mike Madigan both have been accused of a “pattern of patronage” in their offices and using state agencies to put loyal precinct captains in plum state jobs.

But why is J.B. Pritzker silent on his allies’ use of patronage?

Because he’s dabbled in their same corrupt system himself. Pritzker was on the receiving end of Blagojevich’s patronage, receiving a state appointment and attempting to get another. If elected, J.B. Pritzker would use state government to dole out patronage jobs just like his crooked allies – Blagojevich, Madigan, White, Berrios, and more.

Mickey Straub Refuses to Say Why He Used Taxpayer Dollars to Attend Political Fundraisers

“Madigan Mickey” remains silent as he faces questions about his misuse of public funds

“There’s a reason why Mike Madigan’s union allies support Mickey Straub. First we discover that Straub defended a friend who abused his public office. Now we learn that Straub has done the same. Public records reveal that Straub used taxpayer dollars to attend political fundraisers, but refuses to answer questions about his misuse of public funds. ‘Madigan Mickey’ Straub is the worst type of politician – special privileges for him, higher taxes for the rest of us.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

There’s a reason why Mike Madigan’s union allies are revving up the Chicago Machine for “Madigan Mickey” Straub.

Weeks ago, we found out that Straub believes politicians deserve special privileges. In the late 1990s, a friend of Straub’s was accused of abusing his public position to get out of traffic violations. Straub took to the papers to defend his friend’s abuse of power. Straub later said there will always be “favoritism” and “we all do it to friends.”

But it gets worse.

Now we learn that Mickey Straub used taxpayer dollars to attend political fundraisers. Public records reveal that Straub used his position as Mayor to steer public resources to his own political priorities, but Straub refuses to answers questions about his misuse of public funds.

“Madigan Mickey” Straub is the worst type of politician – special privileges for him, higher taxes for the rest of us. What will Illinois voters learn about “Madigan Mickey” next?

More Mike Madigan Loyalists Endorse J.B. Pritzker’s Campaign for Governor

Stuart, Hoffman, and Greenwood all voted Madigan Speaker, now supporting Madigan’s candidate for governor

“J.B. Pritzker is the key for Mike Madigan to protect his majority, rig the legislative maps one more time, and tighten his grip on power. That’s why it’s no surprise that politicians loyal to Madigan are lining up behind Pritzker, Madigan’s candidate for governor. Illinois taxpayers can’t afford any more corrupt, tax-hiking politicians who are loyal to Madigan like J.B. Pritzker.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

It was over six months ago that we first learned Mike Madigan was “breaking legs behind the scenes” to ensure J.B. Pritzker steamrolls his opposition and wins the Democratic nomination for governor.

We already know Pritzker gave $900,000 to Madigan’s Super PAC and secretly funneled over $200,000 to Madigan’s hand-picked House candidates, but why does Madigan want Pritzker so badly? Other than using Pritzker’s inherited fortune to protect his majority, Pritzker is the key for Madigan to return Illinois to one-party rule by gerrymandering the legislative maps for another decade, tightening Madigan’s grip on power.

That’s why it’s no surprise that more lawmakers loyal to Mike Madigan have endorsed J.B. Pritzker’s campaign for governor. Not only have Katie Stuart, Jay Hoffman, and LaToya Greenwood voted for Speaker Madigan, they’ve pushed his unbalanced budgets, tax hikes, and job-killing regulations.

Now, House Democrats are falling in line with Madigan once again. They want Pritzker in the Governor’s Mansion so they can rig the legislative maps one more time and continue to push their disastrous Chicago agenda on Illinois taxpayers.

ICYMI: Top aide to Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx resigns amid investigation

Law professor: “This is extremely corrupt behavior that is costing the taxpayers of the City of Chicago hundreds of thousands of dollars”

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx campaigned on being a reformer, but she’s allowing her office to be run like a classic Chicago political machine, just like her former boss Toni Preckwinkle.

One of Foxx’s top aides resigned last week after an investigation revealed that he was steering county business to his former law firm over and above typical county rates for legal services. The law firm in question received over $464,000 in business from Cook County. One law professor called it “extremely corrupt behavior.”

From WFLD-TV:

… The resignation of the acting Civil Actions Bureau Chief, Chaka Patterson, comes after Fox 32 News first made inquiries about the State’s Attorney’s use of outside counsel six weeks ago. State’s Attorney Foxx’s office provided us with a statement saying that her own review of outside counsel practices revealed that Patterson was referring significant business to his former law firm, Jones Day. Documents provided to Fox 32 News show Jones Day attorneys were sometimes being paid up to $500 an hour, rather than the customary rates of about a $185 an hour for outside legal services.

From the Chicago Tribune:

A top member of the Cook County state’s attorney’s office resigned Friday after an internal review found he had referred business to his old law firm, allowing it to charge up to $315 an hour above the county’s standard rate, according to an official and county records.

Chaka Patterson, a 49-year-old former partner at the Chicago offices of the global law firm Jones Day, became head of the county prosecutor’s office’s civil division in February just months after State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s 2016 election victory. The Civil Actions Bureau defends nearly all civil lawsuits filed against the county. As head of the division, Patterson was able to refer cases in which the office had a conflict — such as if a judge were being sued — to outside counsel.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx on Friday announced that one of her top deputies had resigned after a review showed his former law firm had billed the county more than the county standard rate.

Chaka Patterson, a Harvard-educated lawyer and prodigious fundraiser for former President Barack Obama, leaves the State’s Attorney’s office less than a year after he left his job as a partner at the Chicago office of the multinational law firm Jones Day.

In June, county records show Patterson hired Jones Day to handle two cases, with the firm eventually billing the county for some $460,000.

… The county rate is $185 an hour. County records indicate the firm billed at rates ranging from $95 to $500 an hour.

J.B. Pritzker Supporter Rides To the Rescue Again, This Time For Joe Berrios

While Pritzker refuses to take a stand on Berrios’ Cook County property tax racket, Pritzker supporter Luis Gutiérrez publicly endorses Berrios

Following the Chicago Tribune’s and ProPublica Illinois’ report highlighting the disturbing cycle of corruption in Cook County property tax assessments and appeals, prominent Democrats have followed J.B. Pritzker’s lead by refusing to take a stand on Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios’ corruption.

Even as Democrats call for Berrios’ resignation or even endorse his opponent, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel refuses to say whether or not he supports Joe Berrios’ re-election, just like Pritzker. Pritzker supporter and outgoing Democratic Congressman Luis Gutiérrez went out on a limb and publicly endorsed Berrios, signaling Pritzker’s tacit approval of their corrupt property tax racket.

Chicago Democrats continue to protect their insider friends while the Madigan-Pritzker-Berrios ‘unholy trinity’ bleed Cook County families and small businesses dry.

Democrats Are Abandoning Joe Berrios, But J.B. Pritzker Is Still Silent

Pritzker’s silence is a desperate attempt to protect the corrupt Pritzker-Madigan-Berrios property tax racket

“J.B. Pritzker refuses to criticize Joe Berrios because without Berrios, Pritzker and Madigan can’t profit from their corrupt property tax racket. Pritzker needs Berrios’ support to secure huge property tax breaks for himself and make it past the upcoming primary. Berrios needs Pritzker to dole out campaign cash and work hand-in-hand with Madigan in Springfield. It’s a racket that would make even the most corrupt politicians blush.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

Days ago, the Chicago Tribune and ProPublica Illinois released their fourth installment of an investigative series looking into the Cook County property tax system. The bombshell report revealed that Cook County Assessor and Democratic Party boss Joe Berrios, with the support of Mike Madigan, is running what is essentially a property tax racket that shifts property taxes from the rich to the poor.

Unsurprisingly, most Democrats want nothing to do with Berrios and Madigan. Just yesterday, three Democratic members of Congress were the latest Democrats to endorse Berrios’ opponent. Last month, “Chuy” Garcia, Heather Steans, and David Orr all endorsed Berrios’ opponent as well.

But who is one Democrat that “won’t be critical” of Joe Berrios or Mike Madigan? None other than J.B. Pritzker.

And it makes sense – J.B. Pritzker is an integral part of the corrupt Pritzker-Madigan-Berrios property tax racket. Pritzker funnels campaign cash to Madigan and Berrios, Madigan gets rich off of his property tax appeals law firm and uses his political machine to back Berrios and Pritzker, and Berrios doles out huge property tax breaks to billionaire insiders like Pritzker while backing Pritzker’s campaign for governor.

J.B. Pritzker’s silence on Joe Berrios is a desperate attempt to protect his corrupt property tax racket with Madigan and Berrios.
