The DCCC Doubles Down On Betsy Londrigan’s Tax Reform Lies

The DCCC and Betsy Londrigan are peddling lies about the positive economic effects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

Democrats in Washingtion at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Betsy Londrigan spent the 2018 campaign cycle peddling a lie that middle class families in IL-13 and across America were not benefiting from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Now, the DCCC is doubling down on this lie with paid advertising even as writers for the New York Times wrote, “To a large degree, the gap between perception and reality on the tax cuts appears to flow from a sustained – and misleading – effort by liberal opponents of the law to brand it as a broad middle-class tax increase.”

The data shows average tax liabilities are down 24.9 percent, two-thirds of American workers paid less, according to the Tax Policy Center, and our economy continues to grow.

“Middle class families in Illinois are saving because Washington is taking less out of their paychecks,” said Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot. “Democrats in Washington and Betsy Londrigan need to stop lying about tax reform and be honest: Americans at every income level owe less because Republicans like Rodney Davis chose tax cuts and economic growth over tax hikes and the status quo.”

More on Londrigan’s lies about tax reform:

WGLT: “It’s that middle-class working families are losing with that tax bill.”

WGLT: Speaking before her October 4th rally in Bloomington, Londrigan said constituents in the 13th District “are very aware that that tax scam and the benefits from it were not for them.”

WGLT: Londrigan misleading voters by saying: “83 percent of the benefits went to the wealthiest, corporations, and special interests. It was not a middle-class tax cut.”

State Journal-Register: Londrigan said the economic boom has not reached everyone, however, calling it “a giveaway to corporations and special interests.”

Londrigan Is Deceiving IL-13 Voters About Her Connections To What She Calls “Big, Secret Money”

“Betsy Dirksen Londrigan can’t have it both ways. She can’t condemn ‘big, secret money’ and then turn around and take campaign cash from ‘big, secret’ corporate lobbyists and Washington, D.C.-based PACs, but Londrigan is doing it anyway because she thinks she can deceive enough voters to win. Betsy Dirksen Londrigan is the worst kind of hyprocrital politician, one who says one thing and does another just to get elected.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot

In another episode of Betsy Dirksen Londrigan’s “say one thing and do another” campaign for Congress, Londrigan recently touted her endorsement from End Citizens United PAC. In the press release, Londrigan condemned “big, secret money” in politics, but failed to disclose to voters her close ties to the “big, secret money” her campaign has received from corporate lobbyists and Washington, D.C.-based PACs.

Here are a few facts that show Londrigan is being dishonest with 13th District voters:

  • Corporate lobbyists are funding Londrigan’s campaign – Londrigan’s campaign has received donations from her husband’s lobbying firm, McGuireWoods, which has an abundance of corporate clients, including health insurance companies and advocacy groups, a student loan trade association, several energy companies, including Halliburton, and gaming companies.
  • Londrigan raised money for Dick Durbin – Prior to running for Congress, Londrigan raised money for Dick Durbin, working hand in hand and personally benefiting from corporate money she now suddenly wants to eliminate.
  • Londrigan has the support of Nancy Pelosi – At the same time she was condemning corporate money, she was in Washington, D.C. accepting corporate money at a fundraiser hosted by the DCCC and Nancy Pelosi.
  • A D.C.-based PAC bankrolled Londrigan’s primary campaign – An outside group in DC, called EMILY’s List, dumped nearly $200,000 into the 13th District to help her win her primary.
  • Londrigan has accepted more PAC money than any 13th District Democrat – Londrigan took more than $50,000 in special interest money during her primary – more than any of her four opponents.

This is not the first time Londrigan has tried to trick voters. Last year, she falsely accused Congressman Davis of saying he did not want women hired on Capitol Hill. In fact, her hometown newspaper, The State Journal-Register,  gave her a “thumbs down” for her comments and also later stated, “We worry that she is letting partisanship trump accuracy.”

ICYMI: State Journal-Register Gives A Thumbs Down to Londrigan & EMILY’s List, Calls on Them to Apologize to Rodney Davis

“Londigran and EMILY’s List have detracted from a much-needed conversation [on sexual harassment]… They should apologize to Davis”

Last week, Betsy Dirksen Londrigan’s hometown newspaper, the State Journal-Register, gave her and EMILY’s List a thumbs down for pushing flat out lies against Congressman Davis’ testimony in a House committee hearing on sexual harassment. Here’s what they had to say:

Thumbs Down: To a political opponent, and a partisan advocacy group, for grossly mischaracterizing comments made by U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

Davis, R-Taylorville, said during a Nov. 14 hearing of the House Administration Committee that he had asked his female-led staff their opinions on sexual harassment issues in Congress. They expressed concern that an unintended consequence of the topic being in the limelight is that some offices might not hire women — an approach Davis said was wrong.

…Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, one of four people seeking the Democratic nomination for Illinois’ 13th Congressional District, initially tweeted: “Really? Are you kidding me? Offensive and illegal. … One more reason he has to go.” She made additional comments on her Facebook page.

Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, an organization that supports pro-choice Democratic women and has endorsed Londrigan, tweeted in part: “Excluding women from Congress is NOT how we should address sexual harassment. Let’s get this buffoon out and elect (Londrigan) instead.”

…Even after those clarifications, Londrigan and EMILY’s List have stuck by their statements. No one likes to admit they are wrong. But that’s not an excuse for using incomplete information to spread falsehoods — even in politics, where we sadly have come to expect half-truths and outright lies during campaign season .

The issue of sexual harassment is finally getting the discussion it deserves. Londigran and EMILY’s List have detracted from a much-needed conversation on Capitol Hill by first not bothering to find out what Davis truly said, and second by refusing to admit they were wrong. They should apologize to Davis.

They followed up by calling on EMILY’s List and Londrigan to apologize to Congressman Davis like other female Republican leaders have called on them to do as well.
