In addition to pushing anti-Semitic tropes, members of her caucus have compared President Trump to Hitler and the leader of the Ku Klux Klan, and Bustos downplays their rhetoric
“As leader of the DCCC, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos has a duty to speak out when her fellow Democrats go too far, not downplay their extreme rhetoric. In addition to pushing anti-Semitic tropes, her colleagues have compared President Trump to Hitler and the leader of the Klu Klux Klan, and Bustos has given them cover. Over 139,000 of her voting constituents – a plurality of those voting for president in 2016 – cast their support for President Trump, and Bustos doesn’t seem to care. Bustos’ ambivalence is an insult to her constituents and allows her caucus to tilt even further to the Left.” – Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos of Illinois’ 17th Congressional District chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the political arm of the U.S. House Democratic Caucus. As one of her caucus’s leaders, Bustos has said they “hold our own accountable” when they fall out of line, yet on one occasion, Bustos downplayed anti-Semitic tropes made by a Democratic colleague.
But it doesn’t end there. Bustos has consistently remained silent as her Democratic colleagues continue to push extreme rhetoric. Below are some recent controversial comments and actions made by members of the House Democratic caucus:
- House Majority Whip James Clyburn and House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler comparing President Trump’s election to the rise of Adolf Hitler
- Rep. Hakeem Jeffries comparing President Trump to the leader of the Ku Klux Klan
- House Majority Whip James Clyburn trivializing the Holocaust
- Rep. Hank Johnson comparing Jewish people to termites
- Rep. Hank Johnson saying Trump supporters – including the 136,017 in Bustos’ district – are uneducated drug addicts and alcoholics
- Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fundraising off anti-Semitism and suggesting one day it will be acceptable to be anti-Semitic
Over 139,000 of Bustos’ constituents voted for President Trump in 2016, a plurality of those voting for president. As her fellow liberal Democrats spew absurd and hateful rhetoric toward the president and others, Bustos has downplayed their rhetoric or remained silent altogether, giving them cover to continue.
